Top ten tips for better Search Engine Optimization 7/10

Linking

Google use a tool called PageRank to measure the quality of a website, Yahoo and MSN have their own versions but basically they are a way of grading a website. Search engines want to make sure that the websites they are showing users relate to what the user has been searching for. The quality of a website is a big factor in this. If your website is linked to from a useful authority site in your field you will receive a boost from the PageRank quality checker and your search results will improve. The best way to describe this is that the high quality website is a pool of water and if that pool of water has streams coming from it then water would eventually move from the pool down the stream. This is the same for websites, if website A has a good rating and it links to website B, website B will eventually get some of the good rating from website A. In a lot of ways this is a PR mechanism because you have to speak to the human who controls the good rating website and ask them to link to you. If you are thinking about link building then you need to set aside a lot of time – in a lot of cases you won’t have a prior relationship with the controller of the other website, you’ll have to research what the site is about and what is the best way to ask for a link. In some cases sites of similar weighting will exchange links with each other and in other cases you can cross exchange sites with sites of similar subject matters.

Link building can be the most difficult part of SEO because very soon after you start, things get into a muddle – keep a record of who you have spoken to and keep a record of the people who have start yes. You need to get into a routine if you are link building, you should create content on your site and research blogs where people are saying similar things – if you can include positive links to other sites then there is a good chance they will do the same for you.

Alongside creating new content you should search for things that interest you and find websites that would welcome the question of you linking to them – this way you have the best chance of getting a high conversion rate and also of staying interested.
