Yahoo and Bing Align
It has been announced today that Yahoo and Microsoft have a completed a deal to make a challenge to Google in the search and search advertising field.
The deal which was completed by way of a press release (still needs regulatory approval) will make Bing the exclusive search engine on all Yahoo properties for the next 10 years.
The deals also gives Microsoft access to the Yahoo search algorithm – which can only improve their rankings competitiveness against Google.
Microsoft will also mobilize their AdCenter (Pay per Click) advertising across Yahoo search – what the deal does say is that Yahoo and Microsoft will keep everything else separate – display ads, IM and email.
So how does this deal affect everyday users and our current search engine optimisation clients?
Yahoo and Microsoft want the merger complete with 24 months following the regulatory approval, which they hope to gain in early 2010.
Then users will have two major search options Google and Microsoft. Google’s results appear only on their website properties while Microsoft will serve results across both Yahoo and Bing at the same time.
Microsoft will use the merger to expand their current market share through search innovation and better indexing of multimedia content as well as pushing further into the current search areas that Google excel in.
When the deal is complete Microsoft will have a product that has the size to complete directly with Google, but to put things into perspective Google’s current market share is 65% of the total search market so there is a way to go to for Microsoft, but this deal is a step in the right direction.
